396-397), the idea for the show Strike Up the Band came about when producer Edgar Selwyn heard, in 1926, that George S. Kaufman was at work on an anti-war satire and wanted the Gershwins to put it to music: 'We can all be grateful to Edgar Selwyn,' remarked Morrie Ryskind, for having the foresight to match their [The Gershwins'] genius with that of George Kaufman's.'
